Odyssey has announced the "results" of the 2008 Endorphin Fix with a letter over at CheckpointTracker and a spreadsheet at OAR Events.
The conclusion that teams should have been able to find checkpoints that had incorrect UTMs and confusing rules of travel is unfortunate. Odyssey states that it was "clear" but I'd argue if over half the field reads a set of instructions and independently arrives at the wrong decision then it was anything but clear. Teams that gave up on finding CP5 almost certainly paid a huge penalty in time lost. I know GOALS did as did MOAT, Action-Learning, NYARA and other teams.
If a race happened south of the Mason Dixon line you know there will be a good discussion at Trailblazer AR and Efix 2008 is no exception. I was going to post a bunch of maps and describe the navigational nightmares. But I think it's being done justice over there. Drop by and take a peek.
What I'm going to offer up is the following:
An alternative set of race standings that toss out CP5 and CP26. I'd also be willing to re-work this to apply a time credit at CP38 for teams that feel as though they spent an inordinate amount of time searching out there. (Running Free may have a case for higher placement if they feel like they wasted a good chunk of time looking for the rope crossing.)
My principles for this standing set: CP5 and CP26 are thrown out. You must have made all the relevant cutoffs and completed all course elements (the river swim, etc....). There are ten teams that managed to meet that requirement. From there it is optional points scored and then time of finish to break ties.
1.) CheckpointZero 13 points
2.) Feed the Machine 12 points
3.) ATP/PVA 11 points
4.) GOALS ARA 9 points in 69 hours 24 minutes
5.) HYPE 9 points in 69 hours 58 minutes
6.) Running Free 9 points in 70 hours 28 minutes
7.) Berlin Bike 6 points
8.) Calleva 4 points
9.) Dancing Pandas 2 points
10.) Towanda 1 point
It might seem a little self-serving but I just want to put out there that unwinding the mess of requiring teams to find points that are substantially off their plot location wouldn't be that painful.
Yak, feel free to use this as a means of awarding CPTracker Series points. ;)
